RUO is a labeling category that separates research reagents from clinical-, diagnostic-, or therapeutic-grade products: the designation indicates a compound is intended solely for laboratory investigation and carries no representation of safety or efficacy for use in humans or animals. It describes how the material may be sold and handled, not a claim about what it does.
In practice, RUO compounds are characterized for identity and purity — usually documented on a certificate of analysis — so researchers can rely on them in in-vitro and preclinical experiments. Responsibility for lawful and appropriate laboratory handling rests with the purchasing institution.
