Bacteriostatic Water

Bacteriostatic water is USP-grade water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, used to reconstitute lyophilized compounds. The benzyl alcohol inhibits bacterial growth across multiple withdrawals.

Unlike preservative-free sterile water, which is intended for a single use, the 0.9% benzyl alcohol in bacteriostatic water is bacteriostatic — it suppresses bacterial growth rather than actively killing established contamination. This is what allows a single vial to be used multiple times over an extended period during laboratory handling.

It is the most common default solvent for reconstituting lyophilized research peptides, both because many are readily soluble in it and because the preservative supports multi-withdrawal use. The benzyl alcohol functions as an inert excipient rather than the compound under study.
