Also known as: BDNF
BDNF is a protein that supports neuron survival, growth, and synaptic plasticity. Neuropeptides such as Semax and Selank are studied for their effects on BDNF expression.
BDNF belongs to the neurotrophin family and acts mainly through the TrkB receptor tyrosine kinase, activating the MAPK, PI3K/Akt, and PLCγ cascades; it also binds the lower-affinity p75 receptor. In neuroscience research it is a standard readout in cellular and preclinical models of synaptic plasticity and long-term potentiation.
The synthetic neuropeptides semax (an ACTH(4–10) analog) and selank (a tuftsin analog) are studied in vitro and in preclinical systems for their reported influence on BDNF and related neurotrophin expression, typically quantified by measuring BDNF messenger RNA or protein levels in treated cells or tissue.
